Quake World is (in my opinion) the best way to play Quake over the Internet. There are commands built in that when used properly will let your Online gameplay be (almost) as smooth as playing on your local machine or LAN. Combine this with the Advanced moves you can do with the Assassin 3D and even the mediocre player (me 8^}) can become pretty darn good. For help with these built in commands you will need to check out the Quake World. Homepage Also there is the QWREADME.TXT file located in your Quake Directory.
In addition to Quake World there is the New and Improved Quake Spy. This awesome program will list active servers and give you all the important information, server name, map, ping, rules, players, url.... and you can sort the information any way you want.
To get the latest Quake World and Quake Spy visit the Quake World. Homepage and hit their files section.
exec adva3d.cfg
joystick 1
Notes: You must disable the Assassin 3D mouse emulator to play Windows Games with the Assassin 3D
1.) If you do not
have an autoexec.cfg file or, if you renamed your old
assassin.cfg to autoexec.cfg and plan on using only the new
Windows 95 versions of Quake. You can rename the adva3d.cfg to autoexec.cfg and it
will execute automatically.
2.) Windows
versions of Quake come with the joystick disabled. Also if you
run the DOS Quake it will disable the joystick. To reactivate the
joystick bring up the console and type joystick 1. If you added joystick 1 to
your autoexec.cfg this is not an issue.
3.) Click Here to read the wqreadme.txt (WinQuake Read Me Text)
file from BluesNews.
4.) Versions of WinQuake will keep all your settings in the
config.cfg file. It may cause problems if you do not delete your
old assassin.cfg settings.
5.) To use the Assassin 3D for the free look, you must turn off
LookSpring and LookStrafe from the Quake Options Menu.
6.) You will need to edit the adva3d.cfg file and include the
bindings for the Assassin 3D Buttons and to customize your button
selections depending on your type of joystick.
Qspy is a cool program that allows you to find servers, their ping times and jump right into playing Quake -- it is highly recommended.
Follow these steps to get it operating with the Assassin 3D.
Click Here to see a screen shot of the Qspy Gameplay setup
screen.
If you are going to play using Quake World. servers you must
first install and setup Quake World following the directions
above.
If you have any problems setting up Quake World or Qspy please read through the following Quake World FAQ's and then check out the Quake FAQ's. Some but not all the questions will appear here and in the Quake FAQ's. The questions that appear here are specific to Windows Versions of Quake.
There was a problem with the supplied ADVA3D.CFG file that has been fixed and Updated Click Here to get a new copy.
Save it to your id1 directory and try again. If you need to edit the adva3d.cfg file try using wordpad or the DOS based EDIT program.
The only time we have seen this is when the units need to be calibrated. We are talking about Windows Versions of Quake (this applies to all Windows Versions of Quake) so that means that you need to calibrate through the Joystick Applett in Control Panel. While calibrating make sure you get to the top and bottom of the little windows, especially the A3D U/D & A3D L/R. You can spin it real fast (sometimes too fast can actually skip and not work) but you do need to get to the top and bottom. make sure that after you calibrate go into the test and make sure it seems ok. Then Apply before you click OK to close the Joystick Applett.
The Windows versions of quake do not use the qbtns commands like the DOS version. You will want to set up the Windows versions with always run turned on (options menu). You may need to execute these commands to turn on fast speeds. From the console... CL_FORWARDSPEED 900, CL_SIDESPEED 900, CL_BACKSPEED 900. the number 900 was given to me by another quake player, the servers will turn you down to their max speed, usually 360-400.
There is a new ADVA3D.CFG file with notes on how to do this. If you would like more information on the advanced Quake controler documentation Click Here for the HTML version which has links to get a MS-Word 7.0 version and the basic Text version.
This is somewhat normal and usually caused by latency (better known as lag), Check out Quake World Central for help on setting up Quake World to help reduce the latency.
WinQuake and Quake World ship with the Joystick disabled, to enable it, bring up the console using the tilde and type in "joystick 1". You will only need to do this one time as it will be saved in your CONFIG.CFG file automatically.
If you are getting errors like "From Remove" or the turtle icon coming up all the time try the "CL_NODELTA 1" command from the console.
To help fight the lag try "PUSHLATENCY -100" Some people say to set this at the negative of your ping, but I feel that causes more errors than it helps. I do like the numbers around -100 to -150 as that seems to work well.
Check out Quake World Central for all the hints and tips for getting this supreme online system set up for you.
